Acer griseum, also known as Paper Bark Maple is one of the most beautiful small, broadly columnar trees. The curly brown, flaking old bark on the trunk shows cinnamon-coloured new bark beneath. The attractive three lobed yellowish-green leaves turn into brilliant shades of red and scarlet before falling in the autumn. Small pale greenish-yellow flowers appear late in the spring. A classic border or lawn specimen.
History: Developed in China and introduced by Ernest Wilson in 1901. Received an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1922.
Acer Growing Tips: Very easy to grow in a wide range of well-drained soils. They thrive in sun but with partial shade to protect the leaves from scorch. A sheltered area away from strong winds is preferred.
