Paperplant Plant. This evergreen shrub is perfectly hardy in UK gardens, but why leave it outdoors when you can enjoy its glossy good looks in your home too! Fatsia japonica, is better known as the Paperplant or Castor Oil Plant. It’s striking, architectural leaves are highly sheened, giving a lush, tropical feel to the conservatory or a bright spot indoors. In autumn, clusters of globular, white flowers appear, followed by round, black fruits.
Height and spread: 2m (78″).
All Year Round
September – November
How to Sow
Sow Fatsia seed on the surface of a good free-draining, damp seed compost and lightly cover the seed with vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag, maintaining a temperature of 18-24C (65-75F) until after germination which usually takes 14-21 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle, taking care not to damage the fragile roots, into 7.5cm (3in) pots. As roots fill the pot, move to the next size.
