How to sow
Sow seeds March to September, at 2 week intervals, thinly, 12cm (0.5 inch) deep in drills 30cm (12 inches) apart in well-drained, fertile soil, which has been raked to a fine tilth. Water ground regularly, especially in dry periods. Thin out seedlings at an early stage, to 10cm (4 inches) apart. Keep cool and moist to prevent running to seed. Alternatively, leave unthinned to produce ‘baby leaf’ crops.
Thinnings can be trimmed at the roots and used in the kitchen. Harvest main leaves as and when required. Snap off close to the ground, and select from several plants to ensure a continuous supply is maintained.
