Wildflower Scabious Field

This cottage garden favourite has a long flowering period and is a valuable nectar source for bees and butterflies, and habitat for moth caterpillars. These large and attractive ‘pincushion’ flowers are ideal for a cutting garden. Plants are mainly seen growing wild in hedgerows, grassland and on roadsides, they make an ideal addition to the flower border and wildlife areas.

How to Sow and Grow

  • Sow indoors: for surest results, 1.5cm(1/2in) deep, in a tray of compost. Water well and place in a cold frame, unheated greenhouse or on a warm windowsill.
  • Keep moist.
  • Seedlings usually appear in 14-35 days.
  • Transplant seedlings individually as they appear to 8cm(3in) pots.
  • Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 20cm(8in) apart.
